A birthday saloon night, a Halloween night, one birthday cake, one costume contest, a lake full of canoes and kayaks, and a cozy fire pit for when it gets cold. Everything on this page is optional except showing up in costume on Saturday.

Where we're staying

A private lakefront estate, about two hours from Toronto

An open kitchen with a marble island built for twelve, a stone fireplace, a games room with a pool table, a huge deck over the water, a dock with red Muskoka chairs, and a boat shed full of canoes, kayaks and paddleboards.

Birthday Saloon Night

Everyone rolls in after work. No rush: check-in opens at 4, the saloon opens at 7, and the cake comes out once the whole crew is here.

Cowboys & Cowgirls

Ranch-hand casual for the birthday girl's saloon. Gowri is handing out a cowboy or cowgirl hat and a red or black bandana to everyone. You bring the rest: plaids, denim, boots.

  • Straight or flare jeans, denim or suede jacket, plain white tee or tank
  • Western shirts, pearl snaps, plaid flannel
  • Cowboy or knee boots, a big belt buckle
  • Bring a warm layer. You'll end up at the fire pit.

  1. Check-in opens

    Arrive whenever work lets you out. Claim a bed, drop your bags, and put your drinks in the fridge.

    Beer, wine and a pitcher of something. Grab a spot by the rail for the sunset around 6.

  3. Saddle up

    Change into your western fit and grab your hat and bandana from Gow. Hats on, boots on. Group photo in front of the stone fireplace.

    Long table by the fireplace. Smoky BBQ, cornbread and a lot of sides, with whiskey and a birthday cocktail at the bar. Bring your own BBQ; see the food ideas below.

Lake day into Halloween night

Water in the morning, games in the afternoon, costumes at night. Clocks fall back at 2 am, so we get an extra hour of Halloween.

Full effort gets rewarded. The costume contest runs right after dinner, and the winner goes home with a prize from Gowri.

    The birthday girl leads a 45-minute easy flow on the lawn by the water. Wear layers; indoors in the great room if it's wet.

    Canoes, kayaks and paddleboards from the boat shed, or cast a line off the dock for bass. The water is cold in late October: lifejackets on, stay near shore, go in pairs.

    Four pairs get a basket of ingredients from Gow's bar and 20 minutes to make a Halloween drink. Cocktail or mocktail, your call. Gowri is head judge. Winning pair gets +2 raffle tickets each.

Every guest gets one raffle ticket at check-in. You can earn more over the weekend. All draws happen Saturday night after the costume contest.

  1. Gowri is game master: she hides everything and hands out the clue cards. Items are inside the house and around the grounds.

  3. Take a team photo with each find. Don't move the items for the other teams.
  4. First team back to the deck with all items wins a prize from Gow.
